La Estudiante del Tecnológico de Antioquia, Karen Durango Restrepo, fue elegida como Deportista del Año 2022 ACORD en la Categoría Mejor Deportista Universitario en la Noche de Gala del deporte antioqueño.
En el evento, que durante 40 años se ha realizado para reconocer lo mejor del deporte antioqueño por ACORD, el gremio de la prensa especializada del departamento, que está cumpliendo 70 años de funcionamiento (1952 – 2022), se entregaron premios en 12 categorías: Mejor Deportista del Año, Mejor Deportista Paralímpico, Mejor Revelación Deportiva, Mejor Deportista Juvenil, Mejor Deportista Universitario, Mejor actuación colectiva, Mejor Técnico, Mejor Dirigente, Mejor Juez, Mejor Liga Deportiva, Mejor Club Deportivo y Mejor Organización al Servicio del Deporte.
El Deportista del Año 2022 cuenta con el apoyo de Indeportes Antioquia e INDER Alcaldía de Medellín y tiene como entidades aliadas a la Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana (sede de la gala), Gatorade, Grupo Coomeva, Universidad Nacional Abierta y a Distancia y Teleantioquia.
La patinadora nacida en Medellín el 4 de octubre de 2001 en el hogar conformado por Paola Andrea Restrepo y Byro León Durango, logró el reconocimiento como Mejor Deportista Universitario, gracias a sus seis medallas de oro en los Juegos Universitarios Regionales y cinco preseas de oro en los Juegos Universitarios Nacionales de la Asociación Colombiana de Universidades - ASCUN.
Un nombre forjado a punto de brazadas
Con disciplina y tenacidad, Karen Durango Restrepo, ha logrado ganarse un nombre en el listado de las nadadoras más sobresalientes de Colombia. Pese a que a los dos años de edad los médicos le diagnosticaron una obstrucción en las vías respiratorias, inició un curso de natación para mejorar la capacidad pulmonar y la resistencia física y, tras sobreponerse a la enfermedad, continuó practicando la natación en la Unidad Deportiva de Belén, en donde conoció a María Teresa Agudelo Restrepo, quien se convirtió en su instructora, en su “Ángel guardián”, aún en la actualidad en el TdeA, en donde se desempeña como docente.
Seguidamente, ingresó al Club Estrellas y empezó a competir en la Liga de Natación de Antioquia. Desde entonces, la progresión de Karen ha sido meteórica y en cuanta competencia regional, nacional o internacional en que participa, su nombre aparece en los primeros puestos. A los 13 años, hizo parte de la Selección Antioquia y Colombia y al Club Huracanes. A los 19 años ya había participado en más de 10 torneos internacionales; pero, el punto de inflexión, fue su excelente desempeño en los Juegos Panamericanos Junior organizados en Cali en noviembre de 2021, donde obtuvo cuatro medallas: dos de bronce, una de plata y una de oro, en 200 metros mariposa, que es su fuerte, hasta el punto que metafóricamente le dicen que es como “una mariposa que abre sus alas y vuela en el agua”.
En el 2015 participó por primera vez en el programa Supérate Intercolegiados de Coldeportes representando al colegio Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana de Medellín, y quedó campeona nacional, título que volvió a conseguir durante los dos años siguientes.
Presencia internacional
La primera vez que representó al país fue en los Juegos Suramericanos Escolares de Paraguay 2015, luego lo hizo en el VI Campeonato Mundial Junior de Natación que se celebró en Indianápolis, Estados Unidos, en el 2017. Posteriormente, participó en los XVIII Juegos Bolivarianos 2017 en Santa Marta y consiguió una medalla de plata para el país; estuvo en el Gran Prix de Tijuana, México, donde obtuvo la marca exigida para competir en el 2018 en los Juegos Olímpicos de la Juventud en Buenos Aires, Argentina; y aportó una medalla de plata en relevos en los XI Juegos Suramericanos 2018, en Cochabamba, Bolivia, donde Colombia se impuso a la superpotencia latinoamericana, Brasil. A finales de ese año 2018, compitió en los Interclubes de Villavicencio, Meta, en los que ganó 20 oros en varias categorías. También, estuvo en la 39ª Copa Pacífico 2019 en Lima, Perú.
Este año, Karen Durango, fue la máxima medallista, de los XIX Juegos Bolivarianos, que se llevaron a cabo del 24 de junio al 5 de julio de 2022, en Valledupar, Cesar, obteniendo cinco medallas de oro, cuatro de plata y dos de bronce. Días atrás, había ganado seis medallas de oro en los Juegos Deportivos Universitarios Regionales de ASCUN Nodo Antioquia, que se efectuaron del 19 de marzo al 30 de mayo. Y, luego, en el marco de los XXIX Juegos Universitarios Nacionales de ASCUN 2022, celebrados en Cali del 26 de septiembre al 9 de octubre, en el que participaron 22 atletas del TdeA, consiguió cinco medallas de oro, que la ratifican como una de las nadadoras más importantes de la natación en el país y una de las referentes del deporte colombiano.
La última participación de la carismática nadadora fue en Paraguay durante los XII Juegos Suramericanos de Asunción 2022 que se llevaron a cabo del 1 al 15 de octubre, en los que alcanzó una medalla de bronce en la prueba de relevos 4x200 estilo libre. Además, la medalla de oro ganada en los Panamericanos Junior del 2021, le dio un cupo a los Panamericanos de Santiago de Chile en 2023. Pero sus ojos y su mente, están centrados en los Juegos Olímpicos de París 2024, donde espera poner la cereza al pastel de su carrera deportiva. Con miras a dicho evento mundial, fue becada por la Federación Internacional de Natación -FINA- para viajar a Rusia para un proceso de preparación específica con el propósito de seguir mejorando sus tiempos, pues la antioqueña es una de las promesas deportivas del país con miras no solo a los Juegos Olímpicos de París sino de Los Ángeles 2028.
Por todo este palmarés, recientemente, el 19 de septiembre de 2022 junto con el atleta Jhon Andrés Berrío Valoyes, Karen Durango recibió la bandera del Departamento en el homenaje que hicieron la Gobernación de Antioquia e Indeportes Antioquia a los deportistas y a los entrenadores antioqueños que representaron a Colombia en los XII Juegos Suramericanos de Asunción 2022. Un honor reservado solo para los mejores.
Investigación y natación
Como siempre ha tenido un espíritu investigador, Karen Durango se interesó por las ciencias forenses y se matriculó en uno de los programas del Tecnológico de Antioquia: Criminalística, restándole tres semestres para graduarse como profesional en esta disciplina. Con la misma actitud positiva que siempre la acompaña, cumple las orientaciones de su entrenadora para sus prácticas y con los profesores en las tareas asignadas. De ellos, ha recibido toda la colaboración para acomodar los horarios tanto en las piletas como en las aulas de clase.
Para el rector del Tecnológico de Antioquia, Leonardo García Botero, Karen es una deportista y una estudiante modelo, destacando su disciplina, tenacidad y compromiso, tres pilares que le vienen reportando grandes frutos en la natación y en sus estudios, de lo cual toda la comunidad educativa se siente orgullosa. En el TdeA, ha forjado buena parte de su brillante carrera porque, el deporte en la Institución Universitaria, significa la construcción del buen ser humano y representa la herramienta que ayuda al desarrollo integral de los estudiantes en todas las facetas de la vida.

The Student of the Tecnológico de Antioquia, Karen Durango Restrepo, was chosen as Athlete of the Year 2022 ACORD in the University Athlete Category at the Gala Night of Antioquian sports.
In the event, which for 40 years has been held to recognize the best of Antioquia sport by ACORD, the guild of the specialized press of the department, which is celebrating 70 years of operation (1952 – 2022), awards were given in 12 categories: Athlete of the Year, Paralympic Athlete of the Year, Sports Revelation of the Year, Youth Athlete of the Year, University Athlete of the Year, Collective Performance of the Year, Coach of the Year, Manager of the Year, Judge of the Year, Sports League of the Year, Sports Club of the Year and Organization at the Service of Sports of the Year.
The Athlete of the Year 2022 has the support of Indeportes Antioquia and INDER Alcaldía de Medellín and has as allied entities the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana (headquarters of the gala), Gatorade, Grupo Coomeva, Universidad Nacional Abierta y a Distancia and Teleantioquia.
The swimmer born in Medellín on October 4, 2001 in the home by Paola Andrea Restrepo and Byro León Durango, achieved recognition as University Athlete of the Year, thanks to her six gold medals in the Regional University Games and five gold medals in the National University Games of the Colombian Association of Universities - ASCUN.
A name forged at stroke point
With discipline and tenacity, Karen Durango Restrepo, has managed to earn a name in the list of the most outstanding swimmers in Colombia. Although at two years of age the doctors diagnosed her with an airway obstruction, she began a swimming course to improve lung capacity and physical endurance and, after overcoming the disease, continued to practice swimming in the Sports Facility in Belén, where she met María Teresa Agudelo Restrepo, who became her instructor, her "Guardian Angel," still today in the TdeA, where she works as a teacher.
Then, she joined Club Estrellas and began competing in the Antioquia Swimming League. Since then, Karen's progression has been outstanding and in every regional, national or international competition in which she participates, her name appears in the top positions. At age 13, she was part of the Antioquia and Colombia National Team and Club Huracanes. By the age of 19 she had participated in more than 10 international tournaments; but, the turning point was his excellent performance at the Junior Pan American Games organized in Cali in November 2021, where she won four medals: two bronze, one silver and one gold, in 200 meters butterfly, which is her forte, to the point that metaphorically they tell her that she is like "a butterfly” that opens its wings and flies in the water".
In 2015 she participated for the first time in the “Supérate Intercolegiados” program of Coldeportes representing the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana of Medellín, and was national champion, a title she won again during the following two years.
International presence
The first time she represented the country was at the South American School Games in Paraguay 2015, then she did it at the VI World Junior Swimming Championships held in Indianapolis, United States, in 2017. Subsequently, she participated in the XVIII Bolivarian Games 2017 in Santa Marta and won a silver medal for the country. It was at the Grand Prix of Tijuana, Mexico, where she obtained the mark required to compete in 2018 at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina; and contributed a silver medal in relay at the XI South American Games 2018, in Cochabamba, Bolivia, where Colombia beat the Latin American superpower, Brazil. At the end of that year 2018, she competed in the Interclubs of Villavicencio, Meta, in which she won 20 golds in various categories. She was also at the 39th Pacific Cup 2019 in Lima, Peru.
This year, Karen Durango, was the top medalist, of the XIX Bolivarian Games, which took place from June 24 to July 5, 2022, in Valledupar, Cesar, obtaining five gold medals, four silver and two bronze. Days ago, she had won six gold medals in the Regional University Sports Games of ASCUN Nodo Antioquia, which were held from March 19 to May 30. And, then, in the framework of the XXIX ASCUN 2022 National University Games, held in Cali from September 26 to October 9, in which 22 TdeA athletes participated, she won five gold medals, which ratify her as one of the most important swimmers of swimming in the country and one of the references of Colombian sport.
The last participation of the charismatic swimmer was in Paraguay during the XII South American Games of Asunción 2022 that took place from October 1 to 15, in which she reached a bronze medal in the 4x200 freestyle relay event. In addition, the gold medal won at the 2021 Junior Pan American Games gave a berth to the Pan American Games in Santiago de Chile in 2023. But her eyes and mind are focused on the Paris 2024 Olympics, where she hopes to put the icing on the cake of her sports career. With a view to this world event, she was awarded a scholarship by the International Swimming Federation -FINA- to travel to Russia for a specific preparation process in order to continue improving her times, since Antioquia is one of the sports promises of the country with a view not only to the Olympic Games in Paris but Los Angeles 2028.
For all this record, recently, on September 19, 2022 together with the athlete Jhon Andrés Berrío Valoyes, Karen Durango received the flag of the Department in the tribute made by the Government of Antioquia and Indeportes Antioquia to the athletes and coaches from Antioquia who represented Colombia in the XII South American Games of Asunción 2022. An honor reserved only for the best.
Research and swimming
As she has always had an investigative spirit, Karen Durango became interested in forensic sciences and enrolled in one of the programs of the Tecnológico de Antioquia: Criminalistics, remaining three semesters to graduate as a professional in this discipline. With the same positive attitude that always accompanies her, she complies with the guidelines of her coach for her practices and with the teachers in the assigned tasks. Of these, she has received all the collaboration to accommodate the schedules both in the pools and in the classrooms.
For the president of the Tecnológico de Antioquia, Leonardo García Botero, Karen is an athlete and a model student, highlighting her discipline, tenacity and commitment, three pillars that have been reporting great fruits in swimming and in her studies, of which the entire educational community is proud. In the TdeA, she has forged a good part of her brilliant career because, sport in the University Institution, means the construction of the good human being and represents the tool that helps the integral development of students in all facets of life.
